Chinese-European Summit Meeting on mechanisation in agriculture
Increasing capacity through new technology
As an agricultural market, China offers significant growth opportunities for farmers and manufacturers. China is expanding its agricultural sector and the mechanisation of agriculture is taking great strides forward. A clear signal for the high degree of interest from the Far East is that this year twice as many visitors came to the Agritechnica from China than in 2007, explained Carl-Albrecht Bartmer, President of the German Agricultural Society in his opening speech at the Chinese-European Summit Meeting in Hanover. Speakers included, among others, Fan Xuemin, Division Chief, Mechanisation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture in China as well as Hubertus Mühlhäuser, AGCO Senior Vice President and General Manager of Eastern Europe and Asia.

“A competition of ideas” at the Agritechnica 2009

The Agritechnica offers the ideal platform for intensive exchange, which is very important between Europe and China. By 2050, food production must be increased by 100 percent to be able to feed the growing world population. At the same time, the climate change will have a negative impact on the expansion of arable land and increasing yields. These challenges call for technological innovations and new cultivation methods. At the Agritechnica, there is a competition of ideas, according to Bartmer, and China can find forward-looking solutions for increasing capacity in the agricultural sector here at the exhibition. Mühlhäuser presented the vision of the AGCO Corporation to the representatives from China: High-tech solutions for professional farmers feeding the world. He sees the best opportunities for growth in China for the AGCO Corporation with the brands Fendt, Massey Ferguson, Challenger and Valtra. AGCO will be setting up production, sales and service in China to take advantage of these opportunities in the future.

Facts and figures of the Chinese agricultural market

China makes up 20 percent of the world population, but only has 10 percent arable land. At the same time, 40 percent of the Chinese population works in the agricultural sector. The mechanisation level, though, lies at only three machines per 1,000 people (Canada has more than 1,800 per 1,000 people) and 85 percent of the tractors in China have less than 25 hp. Xuemin explained how important the advancement of the agricultural sector is for China: about 65 percent of the harvest was harvested per hand in 2008, nearly 63 percent of tillage is carried out with aid of machines. The government invests enormous sums in subsidies for farmers for the purchase of tractors and harvesting machines. Investment in research and development from 2006 to 2009 was eight times the amount in the same time period from 2000 to 2005. Xuemin's objective is to make China an attractive location for Western companies in the agricultural industry. He concluded his informative speech with a “Welcome in China”.
